Save The Cat

Save The Cat – The Last Book on Screenwriting You’ll Ever Need by Blake Snyder

“This ultimate insider’s guide reveals the secrets that none dare admit, told by a show biz veteran who’s proven that you can sell your script if you can save the cat!”

What I thought:

I read this a while ago and wrote the review after I finished it, but for some reason I can’t remember I didn’t publish it then. It’s a fantastic book which educated me and made me laugh, so I’m doing it now! 🙂

Save The Cat has been an incredible resource to me, and has pointed out so many things I had not even considered. Snyder takes you through every step you could take before you start writing, and every step once you have started. I read it when I was at the very beginning of plotting Rise of the Sparrows, and this book has taken a lot of pressure off of me.

All of Snyder’s examples come directly from writing a screenplay, but it’s easy to apply them to other types of writing. He takes you through every part of your book, from the opening scene to the midpoint to the final push, explains why every last point is important and what you can do to make it not only entertaining but also thrilling.

You might be shaking your heads at the idea of reading a book on how to write. Some things can’t be taught by reading but by doing, and I agree that writing is one of them. A little bit of theory can’t hurt, though, especially when it comes to writing, and this is definitely worth a read. Because writing is a creative thing a lot of people skip reading theory, and they really miss out. This book will be worth your time!

Save The Cat is very easy to understand, highly informative and helpful, and – best of all, if you ask me – it’s hilarious. Snyder has a great sense of humour, so not only will he teach you things you didn’t know you needed to know, but he’ll make you laugh while he’s at it, too.

There are some aspects that are only applicable to writing a screenplay, but the vast majority applies to both and I can only recommend that you read this. (plus, the cover looks great!)

I don’t review books professionally. These reviews are mainly a small summary and my opinion on books I’ve loved, they are not intended to be anything more. All ‘reviews’ include a picture, title and name of author linking to the book’s Amazon listing, the blurb from the back of the book and my non-professional verdict.
