What I’m currently reading
Why, oh why, am I struggling with this? It’s funny (the book, not my finding it difficult – that’s weird and unnatural), the writing is smooth and flows easily, but for some reason I can’t put my finger on I’m struggling to get into it.
I wasn’t sure what to read next (is there such a thing as too much choice when it comes to books? Hmm…) so my SO picked this one for me. I’m not very far into it yet but so far I’m enjoying it. I’m hoping to get a good chunk of it read this week.
Blurb:
According to the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter – the world’s only totally reliable guide to the future – the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just after tea…

What I recently finished reading
This was a slow start for me – it’s a huge world with no map to help me put places into perspective, and a lot of history and information was poured into the first hundred pages – but once I got my head around everything I really loved it. The writing style was different to anything I’ve read before, and as I said, it’s a huge world with a lot of history – the world building is fantastic!
So, while it was a slow start for me it’s become one of my favourite books this year. I’ve made a note of a lot of quotes, and will include a few favourites in my review 🙂
Blurb:
Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle.
and…
I really enjoyed Witch Infernal, and my review is already live on Goodreads if you fancy checking it out now – if not, it’ll be up here next week 🙂
Blurb:
The city’s been quiet since Evie and her friends closed the hellmouth. The lycans and Sidhe are on their best behaviour, the witches haven’t been heard from, and Evie should be enjoying the break.
Evelyn Hawke wasn’t made for the quiet life. She’s bored.
Luckily for her, things start going wrong, and she’s expected to fix everyone else’s problems. A trio of celestials task Evie and her friends with the job of tracking down the witch who opened the hellmouth and putting an end to her. Little do they know that the witch has big plans and a far-reaching influence.

What I think I’ll read next
There are a couple of books I’d like to read next, but Crooked Kingdom is going to be out very soon, and I will read it as soon as it pops through my door! I don’t want to have to put another book aside for it, but I’ll see how quickly I get through Good Omens. I’ve received a few books for review recently and some of them are quite short, so I might read one of those while I wait for Crooked Kingdom to arrive.

Have you read any of these and would like to chat about it? I look forward to hearing from you if you do – just leave a comment below and we can get this book club started!

I actually didn’t finish Good Omens when I tried reading it back when I was at uni, though I have thought on more than one occasion that I should give it another go. I enjoy Terry Pratchett but I’ve actually never clicked with Neil Gaiman and I don’t know if that’s part of my issue… At any rate, I hope it picks up for you!

That’s probably it, then. Do you still have the copy you had at uni? If not, perhaps you could borrow one if you want to try again. Our tastes do change with time!
Heading over to yours now 🙂
Happy reading!

I was exactly the same with Good Omens, it’s good and there’s absolutely no reason I should have read it slowly – and yet I did! It’s very weird.

I love Terry Pratchett and I love Neil Gaiman, the writing flows so smoothly and it’s funny, so I’m not sure why I’m struggling with it. It’s really everything I want in an urban fantasy novel! I’m glad to hear it’s not just me, I thought I was going mad for a moment ^-^
I’ll pop over to yours now – happy reading 🙂

I sometimes feel as if I read Neil Gaiman books slower than others. Not sure why!

I usually love his books, so I can’t explain this I hope it’ll grab me more as I continue, because I want to love Good Omens. Not enjoying it feels a bit like blasphemy.
Just popped over to yours 🙂 Happy reading!

I hope your current book gets better. It happens sometimes, and when it does, I try to switch genres and come back to the book later. I like the sound of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms 🙂
Happy reading!

I think if I left it now I wouldn’t come back to it, so I won’t risk that 🙂
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms was really good, I’d definitely recommend it 🙂

The first time I read Good Omens, it was great. I didn’t feel the need to rush through it, though. The interesting bit was when I went to re-read it, and got about 50 pages in, and just didn’t feel a push to keep going. I certainly enjoyed it, and would definitely recommend it. But I know what you mean about it seeming to be a bit slow sometimes.

I want to enjoy it because I love both authors and their other books, but I’m not feeling that push to keep going, either. The truly confusing thing is that I can see all those components that make it great! It’s my kind of book in every way!

Lately I’m not ready to re-read Sir Terry yet (I read The Shepherd’s Crown after its release, about 3-4 months after his death, and there was TOO MUCH crying). But Good Omens is a classic. 😉 Keep at it, trust me 🙂

I haven’t read any of these books, Sarina, but they do look tempting. I often ask myself that same question about why I’m not getting into a book that should be awesome. Maybe we’ll figure it out someday!

It’s such a shame, because I like both authors. I can see why I should like it, but for some reason it’s not grabbing me.
Thanks for visiting! 🙂

So glad to hear you loved The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms! It’s one of my favorite fantasy reads. You should definitely try N.K. Jemisin’s other series as well–in my opinion, they’re even better 🙂 I can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom either! Kaz is one of my favorite YA protagonists.

It’s one of mine now, too, and I’m really looking forward to her other series 🙂
I agree, he’s one of mine, too. I’m glad I didn’t read Six of Crows when it first came out, the wait would have been frustrating!

Looking forward to seeing your reviews for The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and Witch Infernal.
I’m sorry that something isn’t clicking for Good Omens. I hope it gets better for you 😦
You’ve reminded me that I still need to read Six of Crows. I just bought the last two books of her Grisha trilogy that I hope to finish by mid-October so I can start on the other series!
Happy Reading!

My review for Witch Infernal will be up on Thursday 🙂 I have yet to write my review of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms but I should get to it this week.
I don’t know what it is, we just don’t get along 😦
Six of Crows was my first read by her, so I haven’t read The Grisha Trilogy yet but I’m looking forward to it 🙂 What do you think of it so far?
Happy reading! 🙂

I enjoyed the potential of the first book and I have the rest of the trilogy waiting for me on my shelf. The worldbuilding was excellent, but I wanted a bit more on the character side. I enjoyed Bardugo’s writing story though 🙂

Good luck getting through Good Omens. I read it in high school so I don’t remember if I struggled with it or not. I do remember I thought the ending was funnier than the beginning. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!
